Core Network Optimization: The Control Plane, Data Plane and Beyond

The increased data volume, combined with the spike in adoption of small cells and IP Multimedia Subsystems (IMS), is causing a significant rise in the signaling traffic in the 3G and LTE Core Network. There is a clear need to optimize and load balance the signaling traffic so as to not overload the network elements and thus negatively impact the service experience for the users.

This webinar will look at the sources of the problems affecting the core network and some of the approaches to optimize service delivery without diminishing the QoS/QoE of end users. It will discuss a number of solutions combining network analysis, content optimization and other innovative approaches to increase capacity of the core network and policy enforcement devices.

  • Changes to backhaul (RAN cloud, SDN, etc.)
  • Optimizing the smartphone and small cell load on the signaling plane
  • Optimizing the flow of Diameter messages between the EPC network elements

About the Presenters:

Karl Wale, Director of Product Line Management
Karl is the Director of Product Line Management for ATCA Solutions at Radisys. He is responsible for strategic direction and product management for the ATCA platform products with specific responsibility for the deep packet inspection (DPI) product lines. Prior to Radisys, Karl held product marketing positions within Motorola and Blue Wave Systems. He managed a range of VoIP and compute server products as well as industrial and defense-related DSP products based on CompactPCI, PMC and VME form factors. Karl has also held positions in Project Management and Hardware Design within the GEC group in the UK and sales positions at Loughborough Sounds Images.

James Radley, Senior Architect
James is a seasoned industry professional with nearly 25 years’ experience in the computer industry, the last 19 years of which he has spent focused on the design of platforms for the telecommunications industry. At Radisys, James specializes in network technologies including the use of switches and packet processors. James is a customer-facing architect and is well placed to articulate how Radisys technology can be employed to address the real world challenges that customers face.

Prashant Sharma, Systems Architect
Prashant Sharma is a Systems Architect at Radisys with prime focus on ATCA platform optimization utilizing intelligent load balancing and purpose build vendor silicon. With extensive experience in Trillium’s 3G, 4G and VOIP network solution, he is uniquely positioned to address platform challenges in today’s 4G core/IMS network elements. He has experience benchmarking packet processing silicon like XLR/XLP, OcteonII and Intel DPDK solution that addresses high throughput, DPI and QoS needed by core network elements. Prashant holds a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Engineering from Regional College of Engineering, India.

Dikshit Sawhney, Program Manager
Dikshit Sawhney is a Senior Solutions Architect for Radisys Corporation with his primary focus on Trillium branded protocol software for 3G/LTE/IMS networks. He has more than 16 years of experience in Telecommunications Software Design and Development. Prior to Radisys, Dikshit has worked in different roles at Continuous Computing, Intel, and Trillium Digital Systems in the area of Wireless and VoIP software development. Dikshit started his career as a Research Engineer at Center for Development of Telematics (C-DoT), New Delhi, where he worked on the Call Processing Software for a Class 5 telephone switch. Dikshit has a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh, India.
