Many ATCA based network element platforms will often utilize a pool of identical servers to process the divided up workload. Together these parallel blades may be required to provide services for many thousands (if not millions) of individual clients. A vital component therefore of such a platform is the module which distributes traffic evenly across this dedicated bank of server node blades.
Radisys offers two types of solutions for providing the load balancing function in an ATCA chassis. The first, ‘wirespeed’ load balancing resides on the ATCA chassis’ internal switch/hub. The second provides an intelligent adaptable load balancing solution using a s/w technology called ‘FlowEngine’ which is designed to run upon Radisys’s family of both Broadcom and Cavium based packet processing blades.
